Michael Hurley @ Union Pool

May 22, 2014

Age and experience deepen quality artists & Michael Hurley is a prime example.  Like the warm glow of reclaimed wood or the rich patina of antique copper, father time can sometimes be kind.  It was 50 years ago when Michael Hurley released his first album.  Pennsylvania born, he moved to New York City where he picked his guitar and sang his folk songs in Greenwich Village until he got discovered.  Since then he's done a lot of living and made a lot of music.  On Thursday night, five decades later, he captivated a sell out crowd of adoring fans in Brooklyn.

Built To Spill @ Music Hall of Williamsburg

May 20th, 2014

Built To Spill have been a band for over 20 years.  Led by founder and guitarist Doug Martsch, they've released eight full length albums.  Looking back, virtually everything they've ever done has received glowing reviews.  Don't believe me?  Do a little digging.  What they are, at the end of the day, is just an outstanding American rock band.

Swans @ Music Hall of Williamsburg

May 19th, 2014

Swans are on the road promoting their latest critically acclaimed album "To Be Kind", a mammoth masterpiece produced by John Congleton that clocks in at over 2 hours.  They played the Music Hall in Williamsburg and delivered a seven song set that stretched out over a couple hours and blew more than a few minds.

Lazyeyes @ Mercury Lounge

May 2nd, 2014

Jason Abrishami, the lead singer and guitarist for Brooklyn's Lazyeyes, has been emailing me for awhile about coming to one of their shows around town.  For one reason or another, the stars just never aligned until the other night.  They opened for Stardeath and White Dwarfs at Mercury Lounge and a buddy & I caught their set.  I'm glad Jason kept me in the loop because they put on a damn good show.

Jolie Holland @ Union Pool

April 29th, 2014

It's been a long winter, but warmer weather is just around the bend.  Thank God.  After months and months of being held hostage in our homes by the cold outside, I'd say America is primed for an epic summer of getting out there.  If like me you're down to get adventurous, mark May 20th on your calendar.  That Tuesday, Jolie Holland is set to release "Wine Dark Sea" on Anti- and it's ready to kick your ass out the door and down the road.
