Tinariwen were a long way from home when they played a two night stand at Brooklyn Bowl this week. The trendy confines of BB are a world away from the shifting Sahara sands of Northern Mali.

Two Norwegians and a New Yorker walked into a packed Brooklyn club with some laptops and drum machines. The buzzing crowd raised their arms, exhaled clouds of herb, and greeted them with open minds. The trio of music makers then took the stage, one after the other, and switched the crowd's energy from potential to kinetic.

Though she's been around for awhile, chances are you've never heard of Tiombe Lockhart. From 2008 to 2012 she was the voice of Cubic Zirconia, a club funk trio whose album "Follow Your Heart" was released by Fool's Gold in 2011. Short on hits and long on mediocrity, they failed to generate much of a buzz. Now, Ms. Lockhart is striking out on her own.

Austin, Texas is a city known for its love of all things music. It's most famous for the South By Southwest Festival it hosts each spring, but no matter what time of year you visit, live music is everywhere. I mean, local bands regularly play the airport. Seriously. The capital of Texas is filled with a mind bogglingly diverse population of music junkies who are artist friendly, but tough to impress. White Denim calls the place home and the four piece is earning fans far beyond the Bat City.
